AFLW Results: More wins for VIC

Another two wins to Victoria Metro and Country completed Day 2 of the NAB AFLW Under-18 Championships on the Gold Coast.

Vic Metro had its undefeated Championship run challenged by Queensland for the second year in a row, trailing the home state by two points at half time at Southport. Unlike the upset defeat in 2018 at Broadbeach, Metro steadied in the second half to record an 19-point win. Emily Harley and Nell Morris-Dalton provided the key targets up forward, kicking the first two goals of the game for Metro in the second and third terms. Leading by just six points at the final change, acting captain for the game Gabby Newton kicked a steadier for Metro four minutes into the final term, with Elisabeth Georgostathis – who excelled in the role of small forward in the muddy conditions – kicking the sealer just a few minutes later. Sarah Sansonetti was a rock in defence for Metro while Northern Knights teammates Jessica Fitzgerald and Britney Gutknecht also impressed.

In the second game, while Vic Country conceded the first goal of the match to the Eastern Allies, they were quick to take control of the match, ensuring the early goal was their last goal till the final term for their opponents. Country continued its undefeated Gold Coast trip with back to back wins, with captain for the day Molly McDonald starring for her team. Stingrays teammate Isabella Shannon impressed in defence, while Sophie Molan won plenty of the ball and drifted forward for a goal.

The Championships finish Friday with Vic Metro facing Eastern Allies (10am) and Vic Country meeting WA (12pm) at Bond Uni.
