21 of the AFL Draft's 22 first-round selections, with Carlton's no.1 pick Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons) in the centre

TAC Cup produces 49 draftees

Forty-two TAC Cup players were selected at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft across Thursday and Friday before a further seven were taken at Friday’s AFL Rookie Draft.

Carlton’s no.1 pick Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons) became the eighth straight top AFL Draft selection from the TAC Cup and headed 14 TAC Cup players taken in the first round on Thursday night, before a further 28 players were picked in the remainder of the draft on Friday.

These 42 selections represented 54 per cent of the 78 total picks in the AFL Draft, and along with the six players taken from the VFL – all of whom graduated from TAC Cup programs – AFL Victoria’s talent competitions produced 48 AFL Draft selections (62 per cent of all players picked).


Among the selections from TAC Cup clubs were:

  • This year’s Morrish Medal winner Liam Stocker (Sandringham Dragons);



  • Four TAC Cup club best-and-fairest winners: Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons), Ely Smith (Murray Bushrangers), Jack Ross (Oakleigh Chargers) and Noah Gown (Gippsland Power);


  • Eighteen TAC Cup Team of the Year members: Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons), Ben King (Sandringham Dragons), Bailey Smith (Sandringham Dragons), Isaac Quaynor (Oakleigh Chargers), Xavier Duursma (Gippsland Power), Liam Stocker (Sandringham Dragons), Riley Collier-Dawkins (Oakleigh Chargers), Ely Smith (Murray Bushrangers), Xavier O’Halloran (Western Jets), Rhylee West (Calder Cannons), Will Kelly (Oakleigh Chargers), Bailey Williams (Dandenong Stingrays), Curtis Taylor (Calder Cannons), Zac Foot (Dandenong Stingrays), Noah Answerth (Oakleigh Chargers), Connor Idun (Geelong Falcons), Tom McKenzie* (Northern Knights) and Buku Khamis* (Western Jets);



  • Five Next Generation Academy members from indigenous or multicultural backgrounds: Isaac Quaynor (Oakleigh Chargers), Toby Bedford (Dandenong Stingrays), Atu Bosenavulagi (Oakleigh Chargers), Buku Khamis* (Western Jets) and Blake Schlensog* (Geelong Falcons).
